Safe Wildlife Crossing Designs for
Interstate 15, Temecula, CA
After being nominated to represent our department to compete against the other engineering colleges at Cal Poly Pomona's Senior Project Symposium, we are proud to represent the department of Civil Engineering for this years graduating class. A team of four presented a condensed version of our plan of wildlife passageway system for a rehearsal for our final presentation. Presenting to a select group of advisors, professors, and fellow students our team welcomed any comments to improve our overall presentation. This rehearsal presentation was a success and our team looks forward to both the Symposium and Showcase on the 26th at Cal Poly Pomona.

Safe Wildlife Crossing Designs for
Interstate 15, Temecula, CA
A representative group from the I-15 Safe Wildlife Crossings team attended the Inter-Agency Working Group Presentation at Temecula's City Hall to present on the updated plan of action to create a safe wildlife crossing in the Temecula area. Two additional presenters, including Winston Vickers from the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center, gave presentations on the California Mountain Lion activity in the Santa Ana Mountains and statewide. Our students presented on our alternative passageways that can encourage California Mountain Lion movement and other wildlife movement across Interstate 15. After giving the presentation our team answered questions from the audience of professionals with biological backgrounds. There was also some discussion among the attendees about the timeline of this project.

Moving forward The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is focused on doing what is possible to implement all passageways; at the moment grants are being processed in relation to the Underpass at the Temecula Creek site. We as a team, along with TNC, think that all of our alternative passageways would work best as a system of passageways for wildlife.

Safe Wildlife Crossing Designs for
Interstate 15, Temecula, CA
A representative group from the I-15 Safe Wildlife Crossings team and The Nature Conservancy visited the Caltrans District 8 office to present on the updated plan of action to create a safe wildlife crossing in the Temecula area. This group of students discussed the alternative approaches to creating the passageways and how they could partner with Caltrans on bringing this project to life. During the presentation, the students received feedback on the structural analysis, foundation design, and feasibility of the alternatives. There was also some discussion between the team and agency about how to bundle the wildlife interest group's intention and the maintenance of existing structures. At this meeting, Caltrans system managers traded contact information with the students to develop their engineering approaches and continue the conversation of how their proposed alternatives can be combined with future projects to absorb design costs.
Since the Caltrans presentation students have been in contact with Caltrans managers to develop their ideas and address feasibility concerns. The points that arose in this gathering helped solidify the options that will be presented at the next event in Temecula on April 19.
